Eurailpasses and Europasses
These are the two most popular types of passes. They offer the same basic benefits:
- Discounts for two or more traveling together
- Cheaper second-class versions for youths
- Rail & Drive versions
- The same non-rail bonuses (such as free or discounted boat rides)
- A pricing scheme that lowers your per-day travel cost as you add travel days.
The main difference between the two is coverage: The Eurailpass is valid in 17 countries, while the cheaper Europass is valid in 5 countries (a few more can be added for an extra cost).
So which pass is best for you? In general, a whirlwind type trip covering many countries warrants a Eurailpass, while a trip focusing on the 5 core countries is best served by a Europass (see maps below). Read on to see which fits your needs best.
The EURAILpass, the grandaddy of all passes covers 17 countries, ranging from Portugal to Finland to Greece (see map). Eurailpasses are valid for a set number of days depending on which of the two types you choose: Consecutive day passes are valid for 15 days, 21 days, 1 month, 2 months, or 3 months. Flexipasses allow 10 or 15 travel days within a two-month period. Two or more people traveling together can save 15% by getting a Saverpass. The Eurailpass is all-encompassing and convenient, but for some travelers it's overkill. If you don't plan to travel through many of the 17 countries, consider a Europass.

The EUROpass is a slimmed down version of the Eurailpassthink of it as Eurail Lite. The basic Europass is valid in Germany, France, Switzerland, Italy and Spain. For additional fees you can add adjacent countries (called zones) to your pass.
By figuring out the exact number of travel days and/or extra countries you need, you can custom-design your own pass. But if you want more than 15 days of travel, or want to cover more territory, a Eurailpass makes more sense.
All Europasses include:
- France
- Germany
- Italy
- Spain
- Switzerland
You can add up to two of the following four "zones":
- Austria and Hungary
- Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg
- Greece
- Portugal

Saverpasses Looking to save money? When two or more adults travel together at all times, they each save 15 percent ($52 to $234, depending on the pass) by sharing a First Class Saverpass, compared to buying separate first class passes. Because this is a "shared" pass, members of the traveling group must be identified and paid for at the time of purchase, and all must be present to validate the pass.
The Saverpass option is available with both Eurailpasses and Europasses.

Choosing the Eurailpass or Europass that's Right for Your Trip
Here are a few factors to keep in mind regarding Eurail and Europasses:
- Neither the Eurailpass nor the Europass is valid in the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland).
- Europasses and Eurailpasses pay for themselves more quickly in the north where rail travel costs are higher.
- A one month Eurailpass ($918 first class, $644 second class youth) pays for itself with a trip from Amsterdam to Rome to Madrid to Paris.
- One Europass is usually a better deal than buying several single-country railpasses.
Pass
Coverage of Supplements and Special Trains Railpasses do not cover any seat or sleeper reservations.
On many trains, you can just hop on and sit in any unreserved seat; however,
some trains require that you pay a small fee (usually around $4) for a seat
reservation. A few fast and fancy trains may charge railpass holders a more expensive
supplemental fee of $10 to $25.
