International Women’s Day – Glamour and Jazz around Italy

As you may know the 8th of March is the International Women’s Day, called Festa della Donna in Italy. In Roman times March 8 was a sacred day to celebrate Ariadne, a sort of prototype of Mediterranean women.

In Italy usually men celebrate women with the traditional gift of a yellow mimosa bouquet. Once intended to be a day when women could claim their freedom, emancipation and political rights, today the International Women’s Day is an important date where women can meet and strenghten their collective identity.

Well, let’s see together some of the the appointments scheduled in Italy. If you are looking for glamourous events than Milan shall be the right choice.

Here you can enjoy special shopping tours in Corso Buenos Aires and private showroom, thermal baths, special dinners with naked waiters and all night long parties. Everyone of these activities is strictly dedicated to women.

But if you are looking for special event then we shall speak about what will happen in Ortona (Chieti), in Abruzzo Region, where Women in Jazz will be held on Women’s Day.

From 5 to 8 March at the Teatro Tosti in Ortona (Ch) the tenth edition of  Donne in Jazz, the Italian exhibition dedicated to the genius jazz women. This year the exhibition will be accompanied by Jazz ‘n’Rose, an evening of music and flavours.

Women in Jazz has got many side events, among which is to mention an anthology film projection dedicated to Duke Ellington and the exhibition Icons of Jazz. Than Jazz & Wine, music, food and wine.

The main Women in Jazz show opens on 5, 6 and 7 with big names like Simona Molinari, Sarah Jane Morris and Nina Zilli, who is participating to  Sanremo Festival Internazionale della Canzone Italiana.

Good drink and warm and welcoming atmosphere are the main ingredients of Jazz ‘n’Rose scheduled for the evening of 8 March. This is a real guided tour inside music that will involve dozens of clubs in the province of Chieti, Not only places devoted oto music but also restaurants, bars, wineries, bed and breakfast, farmhouses, producers and wine bars.

Fifteen municipalities and more than forty structures that compose a special musical-eno-gastronomic route in the heart of Abruzzo.

Another enchanting trip for Women’s Day I am going to propose is in Lucca, in Tuscany Region. Lucca Jazz Donna is another well established manifestation, that has come to sixth edition. Lucca Jazz Donna 2010  is going to be hold from March 6 to 27.

24 are the women, musicians on the stage of this event, in the 8 dates of festivals and events. The most famous female jazzers in Europe, and even from overseas. They are coming from Italy, France, Germany, United States, Argentina and Japan.

Virginia Mayhew and the ensemble Ratrabra – the Female4 (Sunday 14th), Giuliana Soscia and Claudia Tellini (Saturday, 20 March), the saxophonist Carla Marciano with the ensemble Gaia Cuatro (Sunday, 21 March).
